Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369463 AB OBJECTIVE: To determine trends of initial clinical entities in AIDS patients (1983 and 1993) and analyse impact of different definitions. METHODS: AIDS cases registry was analysed. RESULTS: Trends of clinical entities are as follows: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. During 1983-84 the definition in use was that of CDC1985. In 1988 the WHO 1987 definition was adopted; including wasting, neurological abnormalities and Tb (both pulmonary and extrapulmonary). In 1993, WHO definition was adopted including cervouterine cancer and recurrent pneumoniae. DISCUSSION: Wasting, syndrome, Tb and other infections have become predominant manifestations SK and PCP have decreased proportionally. Tb was underestimated in the initial phase of the epidemic. Stabilization after 1988 correlated with the high prevalence of Tb in Mexico. Increase in wasting between 1988-1993 is real and reflects multifactorial causes.
